Sihanouk International Airport to be able handle 10 million passengers

Cambodia Airports will upgrade the capacity of Sihanouk Airport to be able to handle 10 million passengers per year through their master plan on expanding overall terminal building capacity.

The master plan for terminal expansion was approved by the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation on Thursday in a meeting between H.E. Mao Havannall, Minister in charge of the SSCA and Alain Brun, the newly-appointed CEO of Cambodia Airports.

Under the master plan, the new terminal in the airport will be upgraded to be able to handle 10 million passengers per year, according to a post on the SSCA Facebook page.

The initial construction is set to start earlier next year with the increased capacity in the first phase being able to handle 3.6 million passengers and the second phase of construction will be started in 2022.

The terminal capacity expansion is being undertaken at the same time as Cambodia Airports is upgrading the runway at Sihanouk International Airport from 2,500-metres to 3,300-metres in length.

The runway expansion is set to be completed in 2020 and will allow landing and take-off of long-haul aircraft.

H.E. Mao Havannall asked relevant parties to closely cooperate to achieve the master plan, particularly since the upgrading of facilities capacity is to facilitate the arrivals and departures of world leaders who will attend the ASEAN Summit scheduled to be hosted in southwestern Cambodia’s Preah Sihanouk province.

Figures from Cambodia Airports, the company that manages three international airports in Cambodia, show that the number of passengers through Sihanouk International Airport rose by 210% in the first half of this year, to 755,000.

Last year, Cambodia’s international airports reached a significant milestone by handling a combined 10 million passengers.
