Samdech Techo Hun Sen: Phnom Penh has doubled in size

With strong economic growth and rapid development projects across the city, Phnom Penh has doubled in size, according to Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen noted during the Cabinet Plenary Session held on 25 October that Phnom Penh has been developing fast and doubled in size while also pointing that garbage has become the main issue the city is facing and needs an urgent measure to address it.

With such problems and the criticism from residents over the issue of waste management, the government has taken immediate action to temporarily revoke the operation license from garbage collector firm Cintri before opening the service up for bidding.

“One company is not enough before Phnom Penh previously covered more than 300 square kilometres, now our city has gone up to more than 600 square kilometres,” he said.

Following the revoke, Cintri will receive compensation, and all current physical and human resources of the company will be put temporarily under the control of the government.

In addition to the garbage problem, Samdech Techo Hun Sen also said that parking is a major problem facing Phnom Penh as the city is developing rapidly. He has also urged the establishment of underground parking lots. (Read more)
