First wind energy project in Cambodia unveiled

Renewable energy company Blue Circle from France has unveiled its plan to invest in wind energy in Cambodia.

According to the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Blue Circle’s plan is to build at least 10 wind turbines with a capacity of 80 MW on the top of Bokor Mountain in Kampot province.

Victor Jona, Director General of Energy at Ministry of Mines and Energy, said on Tuesday that the negotiations on power tariff between the company and government is scheduled to take place soon.

“Blue Circle is an energy firm from France and the ministry has issued the license to conduct a feasibility study in Kampot and Mondulkiri provinces. Due to the potential of wind energy on Bokor mountain, the company will invest in the first stage of 80 MW,” Mr Jona said.

The cost of investing in wind energy is between $2 million and $3 million per MW, according to Mr Jona.

Although it would become the first-ever wind energy project in Cambodia, Mr Jona said the negotiation on tariffs between the firm and EDC is important due to EDC wanting power sources with a lower price to sell to consumers at low price in line with the government’s policy.

The power tariff from renewable energy generated by solar farms is $0.076 per kilowatt-hour.
