Government accelerates study on National Road 10 construction

National Road Number 10 linking Samlot in Battambang province, Veal Veng in Pursat province and Koh Kong province is scheduled for construction in 2020, as the inter-ministerial working group has accelerated the planning study.

According to a report from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, National Road Number 10 is part of the infrastructure construction plan for 2020.

The inter-ministerial working group led by H.E. Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister and Minister of Public Works and Transport and H.E. Say Samal, Minister of Environment, recently paid a field visit in Pursat and Koh Kong province to mark the area for the road.

The field visit was made by helicopter for an overview of the area.

Pal Chandara, Secretary of State and spokesman at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, said the recent field visit had not come up with a final result or marked the location for constructing the National Road Number 10.

He said that through the visit to those areas, road marks would create a negative impact to the forest if the road was built through, so the inter-ministries have not yet decided on the final result and await other options with less impact.

“We have not yet selected the area for constructing the road because it was found to impact the forest and we so regret losing forest,” Mr Chandara said.

According to the Ministry of Public Works, National Road Number 10 will stretch over 198km and will be built using a sovereign loan from the Chinese government.
