Private sector urged to invest in clean water supplies

The Ministry of Industry and Handicraft has called on the private sector to invest in clean water supplies as the demand for consumption of clean water n is increasing.
This promotion of clean water investment is to help the government achieve its National Clean Water and Sanitation Policy with a target of 100% of residents in urban areas nationwide having access to clean water by 2025.
Figures from the ministry show that the demand for clean water consumption rose by 7.4% in 2019 to 331, 614, 256 cubic meters.
Of the clean water supplies, 258 private clean water companies supplied 81 million cubic meters last year, and the rest is produced and supplied by the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority, Siem Reap Water Supply Authority, and other state-run clean water supply enterprises.

Although the supply of services has increased, supply is still needed to meet growing demand and to expand to underserved areas. H.E. Cham Prasidh, Senior Minister and Minister of Industry and Handicraft said recently that, “The ministry has urged the private sector to invest in building water systems and expanding water systems to the areas where there are no existing water systems.”
“From now on, our policy is not only to the towns but to the rural areas in every way possible. In addition, wholesale investment is encouraged to resell retail businesses to bring clean water to the homes of people in their target areas,” said H. E Senior Minister during his speech to the newly-elected president and members of the Board of Directors of the Cambodian Water Suppliers Association on 13 February 2020.
The ministry’s report shows that 56.37% of urban areas nationwide have access to clean water and 85% of Phnom Penh residents can now access clean water.
