National Road 3 now 67% complete, on schedule for 2022

Construction of National Road 3 connecting Phnom Penh to Kampot was 67% complete by the end of March 2020 and is due to be completed in 2022, according to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.

The ground was broken on the road upgrade project on Monday 7 May 2018 by Prime Minister Hun Sen.

The upgraded National Road 3 will connect Cambodia’s natural tourist and coastal areas to Phnom Penh, the heart of the country. Given its geographical proximity to the capital, once completed, this important road will contribute to people’s travel and the transport of goods especially salt product transportation from Kampot to other provinces and tourism activities in the north-eastern part of the Cambodian coast.

Samdech Hun Sen reiterated the importance of the road saying that “Once the National Road 3 is completed, people will save much time and costs in traveling. Through this road, people who want to visit Kampong Som can also travel along this highway. In the same way, those who reside along this road will grow their income through various economic activities”.

Despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the construction of National Road 3 still continues. However, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport has currently announced to the public that it apologizes for the impact and disruptions during the construction process. The ministry will carefully monitor and urge the construction companies to water the road regularly, especially in urban areas, to reduce the impact of dust.

National Road 3 (Phnom Penh – Kampot) has a total length of 134.796 km, with 69km from Chaom Chao to Bekkus to be constructed with four lanes and from Bekkus to Kampot town, with a total length of 65.796 km, will be constructed with two lanes with AC quality.

The National Road 3 construction project is costing approximately US$219 million which is being invested by China Road Bridge Corporation and being technically inspected by Guangzhou Van An Construction Technician Company. The project is expected to take 48 months to complete. (Read more)
