Government to Build new US$5 million Landfill in Sihanoukville

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport and the Ministry of Economy and Finance are injecting US$5 million of the 2020 fiscal budget to build a new landfill on 17 hectares of land in Sihanoukville, according to a post on the Ministry of Public Works and Transport Facebook Facebook page on 21 July.

The landfill is located in Ota Sek village, Ou Oknha Heng commune, Prey Nob district, about 3km from National Road 4. This project is being implemented by Heng Sambath Import Export Company, with construction starting on 01 July 1 and taking 17 months to complete.

In the first five years, this new landfill will capable of storing up to 880,000 cubic meters of rubbish. The site includes four holes (130m wide, 150m long, and 2-4 meters deep each), a system to release rainwater from the bottom of the holes, a wastewater collection system, and a pipe system to release toxic gases.

Regarding the waste management in Cambodia, Chip Mong Insee Cement Corporation (CMIC) is also building a new industrial waste management facility in the Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone, to provide industrial waste recycling services to the factories within the zone. (Read more)
