Impact Resettlement in Progress for the 80-MW Pursat River Hydropower Dam

South Korean firm SPHP (Cambodia) Co Ltd. is working with the Pursat provincial administration to relocate and compensate 347 families affected by the construction of the Pursat River hydropower dam project.

According to a meeting between Pursat Provincial Governor HE Mao Thonin and SPHP CEO Kim Myung on 29 September, both decided to set up a joint committee to implement this impact resettlement.

HE Mao Thunin said that compensation will be given to only those who truly occupy the affected location. According to the study, there are a total of 347 families, equivalent to 1,436 people.

He added that SPHP and the relevant officers also have to study the new site carefully to ensure the land is suitable for growing crops before starting the relocating procedure.

“Further, SPHP should also build a sample house for the committee to inspect and evaluate first before proceeding further,” said HE Mao.

Located in Bramoy commune of Veal Veng district, the 80-megawatt Pursat River Dam is being built by SPHP (Cambodia) Co Ltd with an investment of over US$230 million. Upon completion, EDC will purchase power from the company at $ 0.07 / kWh. (Read more)

Besides this ongoing project, Cambodia currently has seven hydropower dams, including Atai Russey Chrum, Kamchay, Kirirom 1, Kirirom 3, Tatai and Lower Sesan 2.
