Kratie-Kampong Thom Bridge Project Likely Delayed to 2023

The government might push the fund-seeking procedure from China to build the Kratie-Kampong Thom bridge project to 2023, despite already completing the feasibility study.

A spokesman at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) HE Vasim Sorya, said that whether there is a short or long gap for fund seeking negotiations depends on the priority level of the project.

“Normally, every five years, we put the master plan into the framework of China’s strategic road and belt project. We have a priority order, except for us or intervention from the Ministry of Economy and Finance. However, in a year we can implement only two or three projects,” he said.

According to MPWT’s announcement in June, the study of the project has been completed. The next step is submitting the proposal to the Chinese government for a loan after the approval of the Cambodian prime minister.

The report back then stated that the bridge would be 1,661 metres long and is scheduled for construction in 2021. (Read more).

According to the initial map, the construction points may be between Koh Trong and Koh Chang. However, the exact location has not yet been confirmed by the minister, since it may be further away from the city to allocate space for the future growth of Kratie town.
