Over 3,000km of Roads in Cambodia Built by China with over US$3 billion in Loans, says Transport Minister

Chinese companies have thus far built more than 3,000km of roads and eight major bridges with a total length of over 8km for Cambodia, thanks to more than US$3 billion in concessional loans from the Chinese government.

Minister of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) HE Sun Chanthol summarised this data in his speech during the video conference of the 11th International Infrastructure Investment and Construction Forum on 02 December.

According to the minister, this number does not include the expressway connecting Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville, which is also being constructed by China Road and Bridge Cooperation on a BOT scheme with an investment of over US$2 billion. (Read more)

“The study of an expressway linking Phnom Penh to the Vietnamese border has also been conducted by another Chinese company,” said HE Sun.

“China has thus far helped Cambodia to develop its economy by providing concessional loans of nearby US$3 billion for infrastructure,” he added.

HE Sun Chanthol also expressed his sincere thanks to other countries such as Japan, Korea, the World Bank, and the ADB, among others who always assist Cambodia with ODA, especially for infrastructure development.

He also pointed out that infrastructure investment and construction were key to social and economic development, as it helps create job opportunities, enhances the national economy, and tightens regional ties.

“Securing funds for infrastructure development is always a major challenge for most developing countries. Therefore, initiatives and institutions such as the Belt and Road, the Silk Road Economic Belt, the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, play a significant role,” said HE Sun Chantol.
