Gov’t Inks Deal on Stung Tatai Leu Hydropower Dam and 500-kilowatt High-Voltage Transmission Line

The Ministry of Mines and Energy has recently inked a deal allowing two private firms to invest over US$830 million in building a 150-megawatt hydropower dam and two high-voltage transmission lines.

The agreement was signed by the Minister of Mines and Energy HE Suy Sem and representatives of the two investment firms on 08 December.

The 150-megawatt hydropower investment project named the Stung Tatai Leu Hydropower is an investment by China National Heavy Machinery Corporation. The project is located in the upper stream of Tatai River in Thmar Bang District, Koh Kong Province.

The project has a total investment of US$390 million with a 35-year concession agreement. Upon completion, the Stung Tatai Leu hydropower plant will be able to supply 527 kilowatt-hours of energy per year.

Meanwhile, the 500kV transmission line project backed by Schenitec Co Ltd includes building two power transmission lines. One of which is a 200km line from Phnom Penh to the Cambodia-Laos border under an investment of US$330 million with a 28-year concession period.

The second one is a 107km line from Battambang province to Cambodia-Thailand border under an investment of US$110 million with 39-year concession.

Both projects are investments in the form of build-operate-transfer (BOT) and were approved at a cabinet meeting in October.
