Koh Kong a Potential Target for World Bank’s Blue Economy Development Project

The World Bank is planning to invest millions of dollars in the ‘Blue Economy’ project in Cambodia, and Koh Kong could be one of the target provinces chosen for the project implementation.

Koh Kong Deputy Governor Ouk Pheaktra said during the meeting with relevant officers regarding the coastal management on 28 December that his authority is currently conducting the feasibility and trying the best to point out to the World Bank the potential of Koh Kong province.

According to a World Bank report on Cambodia Sustainable Landscape and Ecotourism Project dated 30 April 2020, the World Bank has proposed a grant of approximately US$4.42 million to implement the Global Environment Facility (GEF) in Cambodia.

Meanwhile, the Blue Economy refers to the activity of exploitation and preservation of the marine environment. The project was approved by the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Rural Development on 30 April 2019 and is scheduled to be completed on 31 December 2025.

Koh Kong province has the longest beach (237km) in Cambodia, stretching from Cham Yeam Thai Border of Mondol Seima district to Sre Ambel District, on the border with Sihanoukville.

Koh Kong has also attracted multi-billion-dollar investment projects. The most well-known one is Dara Sakor project, while others include the new airport by LYP Group, the hydropower dam, as well as the recently-approved coal-fired power plant project. (Read more and more)
