Construction of US$190 million Bakeng Water Treatment Plant 38% Complete, Operational by Late 2022

Construction of the Bakeng water treatment plant phase 1 is now over 38% complete and scheduled for full completion by late 2022, according to an announcement by the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority on Thursday 26 August.

Construction of the main water treatment section is 10% complete, the pumping station 15%, installation of the main water pipe 53%, and the drilling work to install 2000 mm water pipe across Tonle Sap 30%.

The plant is the largest water treatment plant ever built in Cambodia and will be implemented in two phases.

The first phase is scheduled for completion by the end of 2022 or early 2023, with the capacity to produce approximately 200,000 cubic meters/day of clean water, while the second phase will be able to produce 400,000 cubic metres/day by the first quarter of 2024.

Co-funded by the French Agency for Development and the European Investment Bank with an investment value of over US$190 million, the project is being constructed by Vinci Construction Grands Projects with the technical inspection done by SAFEGE Consulting Engineers.

The project was broken ground on 1 February 2021 under the presidency of Prime Minister Hun Sen after studying for 4 years since 2017. (Read more)
