Phnom Penh Airport Launches Newly-renovated Hi-tech Parking System

A newly-modernised automated parking system is set to be launched for the public at Phnom Penh International Airport (PPIA) on 16 August, according to a press conference organised by Cambodia Airports on 14 August.

Mr Khek Norinda, Communications & PR Director of Cambodia Airports said the 16 August will be a soft opening and only facilitating motorbikes and taxies. The parking system will be fully-functioning for all types of vehicles in the next two to three weeks.

The new parking system is designed to ease traffic congestion within the airport with three main benefits: 1) help speed up the flow for existing vehicles, 2) create flexibility in vehicle flow management as the system can identify congested spots and direct cars to other exits in response, 3) make payments faster and more secure as drivers do not pay at the exits but before exiting.

At this stage, there are currently eight automatic parking payment machines where drivers can pay their parking fee in advance before exiting. Then, at the exits, when one has paid, the barrier lifts up as the system recognises the car plate or the user just scans their receipt.

Moreover, frequent users can also buy prepaid parking cards called “Svay Card”, allowing entry and exit at the airport by just scanning the card. Other benefits are a 10% top-up bonus and the use of fast-track lanes to drop off passengers.

In addition, the parking area at the airport has also been expanded to be capable of handling more than 450 cars at a time or about 3,000 vehicles per day.

According to Mr Norinda, a budget of US$1 million has been spent on the updated equipment and the software. Meanwhile, another US$10 million has been injected for the overhaul of the car park.
