New Waterway Connecting Tonle Bassac to Kep to be Studied by China

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) and a Chinese firm CRBC will work together on the feasibility study of building a new waterway system connecting the Bassac River in Kandal province to Kep province.

MPWT Minister HE Sun Chanthol said on Monday 25 April that the preliminary study conducted by the ministry has been completed.

The study has shown that it is feasible to develop a new waterway connecting the Bassac River to Kep.

“For a detailed study of the project, the ministry and the Chinese company have agreed to conduct together, which is scheduled to begin soon,” said HE Sun Chanthol.

“The firm’s working group will work with the ministry to assess whether the study is possible or not. If the study is completed, we will submit it to the relevant ministries and institutions to help evaluate the impacts and feasibility further,” he added.

If the project is successful, Cambodia will have strategic ports in Saang district, in Takeo province and in Kep province.
