Cambodia and South Korea Explore Small-Scale Hydropower Potential at Dauntri and Reaksa Reservoirs

Joint feasibility study focuses on integrating renewable energy and solar power to secure sustainable water and electricity supplies for local communities

The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology has partnered with the Korea Water Resources Corporation, known as K-water, to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study on the installation of small-scale hydropower facilities at the Dauntri and Reaksa reservoirs. This initiative aims to bolster the regional energy grid while ensuring a reliable supply of water for the daily needs of local residents. The collaboration was the focal point of a strategic discussion held on March 9, 2026, between His Excellency Ponh Sachak, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Water Resources, and a high-level delegation from K-water led by Ms. Kim Chang Soon, Director of the Climate Cooperation and Development Department.

The meeting also included technical representatives from Dohwa Engineering Co., Ltd., and Chilbo Industry Co., Ltd, who are contributing their expertise to the project’s development. The feasibility study outlines two primary strategic projects designed to maximize the utility of existing water infrastructure. The first project focuses on the Dauntri reservoir dam in Battambang province, where preliminary findings indicate a high potential for a small-scale hydropower plant capable of generating 3.6 megawatts of power.

The second project centers on the Reaksa reservoir dam located in Preah Vihear province. Research suggests this site has the capacity for a 6.9 megawatt small-scale hydropower installation. Furthermore, the plan for the Reaksa site includes the integration of solar power, with two separate solar panel locations proposed to produce an additional 1.80 megawatts each. This hybrid approach reflects a growing commitment to diversifying renewable energy sources within Cambodia’s provincial infrastructure.

During the consultation, His Excellency Ponh Sachak emphasized that these projects are vital for long-term resource management and climate resilience. By combining water management with clean energy production, Cambodia and its Korean partners aim to create a sustainable model that supports both economic growth and the well-being of the population in these key provinces. The technical assessments and strategic planning will continue to ensure these facilities meet the highest standards of efficiency and environmental stewardship.
