Achieving over 63 percent completion, the vital Serei Sophorn to Poipet corridor paves the way for seamless international trade and regional connectivity by 2027

The ambitious transformation of Cambodia’s transport network is rapidly nearing its final triumph as the restoration and quality upgrade of National Road 5 enters its last leg. By the end of June 2026, the final 35.14-kilometer stretch of this key arterial highway, running from Serei Sophorn to the bustling border city of Poipet in Banteay Meanchey province, has officially surpassed a significant 63 percent completion rate. This encouraging update was officially shared on July 10, 2026, by Phorn Rim, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, signaling that Cambodia is on the fast track to securing a world-class overland trade route.

With construction teams working around the clock to expedite operations, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport has announced that this critical Serei Sophorn to Poipet section is scheduled for complete delivery within the year 2027. As heavy machinery and construction crews actively work along the route, spokesperson Phorn Rim has appealed to the public and motorists using National Road 5 to exercise high caution. Drivers are urged to travel at safe, manageable speeds to protect both themselves and others, which will also significantly help minimize the dispersion of dust for local communities living along the roadside. The Ministry also expressed its profound gratitude to the local residents for their immense patience and understanding during this period of intensive development.

This final 35.14-kilometer segment is a crucial piece of a broader national infrastructure master plan. The groundbreaking ceremony for this section took place on November 22, 2023, backed by a robust budget of $52.56 million. This funding represents a highly successful financial partnership, combining the national budget of the Royal Government of Cambodia with generous concessional loan assistance from the Government of Japan. Although this particular section commenced construction and bidding later than the other segments of the National Road 5 expansion project, the current acceleration of works ensures it is on pace to seamlessly link with the already completed sections of the highway.

Once completed, this four-lane highway upgrade will serve as an indispensable logistics corridor, linking Phnom Penh directly to the Thai border. By reducing transit times and lowering transportation costs, this project will dramatically boost local businesses, facilitate cross-border tourism, and elevate Cambodia’s competitive edge in the ASEAN economic ecosystem.
