Final Stretch of National Road 5 Renovation Surpasses Halfway Mark

Strategic 35-kilometer link between Serey Sophorn and Poipet targets 2027 completion as joint Cambodian-Japanese project enters critical phase

The comprehensive rehabilitation of Cambodia’s National Road 5 has entered its final stages, with the segment connecting Serey Sophorn and Poipet now more than 51 percent complete. This progress update, reflecting data from the first week of April 2026, marks a significant milestone for the 35.14-kilometer infrastructure project in Banteay Meanchey province.

Speaking on April 9, 2026, Mr. Phorn Rim, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, confirmed that the overall work on this final section has reached 51.07 percent. The project is currently on track to meet its 2027 deadline, providing a modernized transportation artery that is expected to facilitate trade and travel toward the Thai border.

This final 35.14-kilometer stretch represents a substantial investment of 52.56 million US dollars, funded through a combination of the Cambodian government’s budget and credit assistance from the Japanese government. Since construction began on November 22, 2023, teams have been working intensively to upgrade the road quality and expand its capacity to meet international standards.

As the construction sites remain active and busy, Ministry officials have issued an appeal to all motorists to exercise extreme caution when traveling along the affected routes. Mr. Phorn Rim urged drivers to maintain controllable speeds to ensure the safety of themselves, other commuters, and the construction workers.

Furthermore, the Ministry expressed its gratitude to the residents living alongside the road and the general public for their understanding and patience regarding the temporary inconveniences caused by the ongoing expansion and quality enhancement work. The completion of this segment will finalize the broader renovation of National Road 5, which serves as a vital component of the national and regional transportation network. (read more)
