Bassac and Prek Koy Riverbank Protection Projects Achieve 100% Completion Across Kandal and Kampong Cham

Cambodia’s water infrastructure development achieved a key milestone as two major riverbank protection projects along the Bassac River and Prek Koy stream reached 100% completion across Kandal and Kampong Cham provinces. An inter-ministerial working group led by HE Sot Rasmei, Secretary of State and Chairman of the Procurement Committee at the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, conducted a comprehensive site inspection on August 3, 2026, to evaluate the completed civil works prior to official handover. The infrastructure initiative is designed to prevent riverbank erosion, safeguard public assets, and enhance long-term climate resilience for riverside communities.

The newly completed infrastructure encompasses two distinct riverbank reinforcement projects engineered to withstand seasonal flooding and water velocity. In Kandal province, technical teams completed a 500-meter protective embankment along the Bassac River, located in Sangkat Prek Chrey, Sampov Poun city, Koh Thom district. In Kampong Cham province, construction teams finished a 465-meter bank protection barrier along Prek Koy, situated in Prek Koy village, Prek Koy commune, Kang Meas district. Both sites reached full operational readiness following final engineering sign-offs.

To ensure structural durability and long-term sustainability, both protection barriers were constructed using modern engineering techniques that incorporate gabion boxes—wire mesh baskets filled with heavy stone—alongside concrete reinforcements. This technical approach offers high resistance against river currents and soil erosion while maintaining structural aesthetics and environmental integration. The robust construction guarantees sustainable, long-term protection for nearby residential areas, public roads, and agricultural lands.

Following detailed on-site evaluations, the inter-ministerial delegation commended the Department of Hydrology and River Works for executing all project components strictly in accordance with technical standards. Officials highlighted that securing the riverbanks will preserve local achievements, protect community livelihoods, and establish a reliable foundation for ongoing social and economic progress across both regions.
