Feasibility Study of New Waterway Connecting PP to Kep to be Finalised in November

The detailed feasibility study of a project to build a new water transport system along the Bassac River connecting Phnom Penh Port to Kep, Kampot, and Sihanoukville Ports is scheduled for completion in November.

According to the speech of the Minister of Public Works and Transport HE Sun Chanthol on 21 September, after the study is completed, the ministry will submit it for approval from PM Samdech Hun Sen.

“After the study is completed in October or November, the ministry will discuss with the relevant institutions regarding the cost and benefit of the project especially the environmental impact before submitting it to Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen,” said HE Sun Chanthol.

“The distance from Prek Ambel (Kandal province) to Kep is about 168km, and the Tonle Bassac water is capable to accommodate decent-size ships for most of the spots except for some parts that we have to dredge further. We might also have to dredge a completely new 7km of canals to connect to Kep port as well,” he added.

If this project is approved, transportation will be easier and faster without having to transport goods to Vietnam through the K’am Samnar border point. Ships can then go directly from Phnom Penh to Kep and then to Kampot and Sihanoukville.

This project is a collaboration between the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and Chinese firm CRBC.
