100MW Solar Power Plant to Generate Electricity to National Grid

Cambodia’s National Power Supply Company, a joint venture between the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Electricite du Cambodge (EDC), has developed a 100-megawatt (MW) solar power plant that will soon produce 60 megawatts (MW) of solar power to the national grid.

According to a press release from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) dated 15 November, this solar farm project represents an opportunity to generate large-scale, affordable solar energy through public and private sector resources.

Under the project, the power plant will be put out to international bidding to the private sector in two phases: 60 megawatts (MW) and 40 megawatts (MW).

The first auction of 60 megawatts (MW) in 2019 went to Prime Road Alternative, which gets the lowest price of $ 0.039 per kilowatt hour. The second bid of 40 megawatts (MW) went to Trina Solar Co. Ltd, which gets $ 0.026 per kilowatt hour.

During a visit on 11 November, Masatsugu Asakawa, President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), said that solar power generation will be an essential part of Cambodia’s efforts to expand energy connectivity and the shift toward clean energy.

In the meantime, Electricite du Cambodge Director Keo Rattanak said that ADB is one of the first development partners to help connect Cambodia’s households to the national grid from only 17% in 2018 to 90% in 2021.

Through the Energy Development Master Plan (2021-2040) and with technical assistance from ADB, Cambodia expects to contribute up to 1,000 megawatts of solar energy by 2030 and 3,000 megawatts by 2040.

To date, Cambodia, in partnership with the ADB, has developed solar power, which contributes 10% to the nation’s total electricity grid.
