China-Cambodia Flights Set to Expand to 300 Flights Weekly, Attracting Millions of Chinese Tourists

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen announced on 22 March that Cambodia is set to welcome between 3 to 5 million Chinese tourists annually, following the expansion of China-Cambodia direct flights to 300 flights per week.

Prior to the pandemic, Cambodia received over 2 million Chinese tourists annually. During a recent visit to China, Prime Minister Hun Sen and Chinese President Xi Jinping discussed opening more Cambodia-China flights. China considered Cambodia the first country to reopen tourism.

PM Hun Sen said, “During my latest formal visit to China in February, President of China H.E. Xi Jinping made it clear to me that Cambodia is the first country in which China to reopen for tourists, and according to the plan, there will be 300 flights a week between the countries.” said PM Hun Sen.

In comparison to other Southeast Asian countries, Cambodia is targeting a more modest number of tourists, with neighbouring Thailand aiming to attract 10 million international tourists, and Singapore and Malaysia also ramping up efforts to attract visitors.

Cambodia Airways is set to launch a direct flight between Phnom Penh and Beijing, with three flights per week, from March 27 to meet the increasing demand for travel between the two destinations.

The expansion of China-Cambodia flights is expected to boost Cambodia’s tourism industry, and attract more Chinese investors to the country. This is especially important for the real estate sector, as Chinese investors have been significant contributors to Cambodia’s real estate market in recent years. The increase in Chinese tourists and investors is expected to drive the demand for residential and commercial properties in Cambodia.
