MPWT Collaborates with Australian Experts to Enhance Road Infrastructure Design

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) has embarked on a partnership with Australian expert teams to incorporate advanced pavement design techniques. This endeavor addresses escalating traffic demands and bolsters the infrastructural resilience against evolving climate conditions.

On 28 August, a pivotal stakeholder consultation workshop centered on Pavement Design Specification was convened, gathering key stakeholders such as HE Peng Ponea, Minister of MPWT, and HE Justin Whyatt, Australian Ambassador to Cambodia, alongside relevant technical authorities.

The workshop’s prime objective is to establish a platform for experts and stakeholders to delve into past achievements and experiential insights in the realm of road infrastructure design and construction. This collective expertise is earmarked to serve as invaluable input for optimizing pavement design methodologies and orchestrating a comprehensive uplift in Cambodia’s road infrastructure.

This strategic initiative responds aptly to the surging traffic volume while fortifying the roadways against the challenges posed by the changing climate patterns.

Minister Peng Ponea emphasized that the workshop assumes a crucial role in modernizing design standards governing critical facets of infrastructure like bridges, roads, and sewerage systems. These standards, originally introduced in the early 2000s through an Australian grant, are set to receive a contemporary update, aligning with the evolving landscape of infrastructure development.

The minister took the opportunity to urge the Australian Government to provide sustained collaboration, highlighting the potential for additional investment in urban sanitation infrastructure, technical standards, and capacity building. This holistic approach is poised to address pertinent challenges and foster transformative growth prospects for Cambodia’s infrastructure landscape.
