ALDOT Integrates Bentley’s AI to Refine Performance-Based Highway Budgeting

Alabama Utilizes Bentley Tech to strengthen data-driven maintenance planning

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is enhancing its long-standing performance-based budgeting model by integrating Blyncsy, an AI-powered solution from Bentley Systems.

For more than 15 years, ALDOT has led the way in using data to drive financial decisions, but the manual collection of condition data across Alabama’s 11,000 miles of roadway has historically been a labor-intensive process prone to human inconsistency.

To address these challenges, ALDOT is now leveraging Blyncsy’s automated analytics, which utilizes crowdsourced high-resolution dashcam imagery from vehicles traveling throughout the state.

This technology applies artificial intelligence to automatically identify and assess the health of critical roadway assets, such as guardrails and signage. A previous pilot project proved the effectiveness of this transition, with Blyncsy’s AI models achieving a remarkable 97% accuracy rate, providing the reliable foundation necessary for precise financial planning.

Morgan Musick, Assistant Maintenance Management Engineer at ALDOT, noted that the solution provides an objective, quantified snapshot of the entire network across all districts.

This allows the department to move beyond historical spending habits and instead allocate maintenance funds based on actual asset conditions. By automating these inspections, ALDOT can ensure that funding is directed toward the most critical repairs, helping the state consistently reach its target Level of Service for every asset.

This move sets a new standard for infrastructure planning. By making financial decisions based on empirical evidence rather than precedent, ALDOT is demonstrating how AI can transform the lifecycle of transportation infrastructure, making it more resilient and cost-effective for the public.
