Cambodia’s Pre-Angkor Capital Koh Ker Temple Attains UNESCO World Heritage Status

In a momentous and unanimous decision, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, convened at its 45th session in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, declared the illustrious Koh Ker Temple a coveted World Heritage Site on 17 September 2023, through Resolution 45 COM 8B.8. This prestigious recognition comes as a result of the Royal Government of Cambodia’s impassioned appeal to commemorate this unparalleled testament to human ingenuity.

This monumental event stands as a resplendent source of pride, not only for the people of Cambodia but also for the entire kingdom, which has proudly safeguarded the cultural heritage of the ancient Khmer capital, once known as Chok Garagrya or Lingapura (ឆោកគគ៌រ្យ ឬលិង្គបុរៈ), and now revered as Koh Ker. This architectural marvel, commissioned by the visionary King Jayavarman IV during the 10th century (928-944), has long been an embodiment of Cambodia’s rich historical legacy.

Acknowledged by the International Council on Temples and Heritage (ICOMOS) as a supreme achievement in Cambodian architecture, the Koh Ker Temple is a global treasure that transcends borders and stands as a testament to human creative prowess. Its inclusion in the prestigious World Heritage List is a celebration of its exceptional global significance.

Nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Koh Ker village, Srayong commune, Kulen district, Preah Vihear province, the temple resides approximately 120 kilometres from Siem Reap and 60 kilometres from Preah Vihear. Travellers from Phnom Penh can embark on a 460-kilometre journey to witness this architectural marvel.

Spanning an expansive area of 16 square kilometres, and boasting a staggering 98 temples, the Koh Ker Temple is a true masterpiece of ancient Brahmanism worship. Its seven-tiered magnificence soars to a majestic height of 35 metres, showcasing the profound spiritual and architectural expertise of its creators.

This prestigious recognition is a momentous occasion, not just for Cambodia but for all enthusiasts of cultural heritage worldwide. As Koh Ker Temple assumes its rightful place among UNESCO’s distinguished World Heritage Sites, it solidifies its position as a timeless symbol of human creativity and a treasure for generations to come.
