Hyundai’s US$1.5bn Green Oasis: Ulsan EV Plant Set to Produce 200,000 Electric Vehicles Annually

In a groundbreaking move towards sustainability and innovation, Hyundai has commenced the construction of a state-of-the-art electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant in Ulsan, South Korea. The US$1.5 billion facility, slated to begin full-scale construction by the end of 2023, represents Hyundai’s commitment to producing 200,000 electric cars annually. This ambitious project signifies Hyundai’s first new manufacturing plant in its home country in nearly three decades, according to Reuters dated 13 November 2023.

Situated on the site of its former proving grounds in Ulsan, the 550,000-square-meter facility is set to become a beacon of eco-friendly production. Hyundai aims to achieve a net carbon-neutral facility by employing “low carbon” construction techniques and operating the plant entirely on renewable energy, as evidenced by its RE100 certification. The company envisions the plant as an integral part of an innovative mobility city leading the way in the era of electrification.

“I trust Ulsan will be an innovative mobility city that leads the way in the era of electrification,” remarked Hyundai Motor Group’s Executive Chair Euisun Chung during the groundbreaking ceremony. The plant, scheduled to commence car production in Q1 2026, will kickstart its operations with the manufacturing of an electric sport utility vehicle (SUV) under Hyundai’s luxury brand, Genesis.

In response to inquiries about Hyundai’s future in the electric vehicle (EV) landscape, CEO Jaehoon Chang has provided clarity on the company’s immediate focus. Currently immersed in the development of dedicated EV plants in the United States and its home country, Hyundai affirms its commitment to sustainable mobility on a global scale.

Addressing concerns about the EV market’s trajectory, Chang expressed confidence in the positive trend for electric vehicles. Despite challenges related to charging infrastructure shortages, Hyundai remains steadfast in its belief that the EV market’s overall sentiment remains optimistic.

Chang also said Hyundai was monitoring sentiment in the EV market but believed the trend for EVs was positive regardless of issues over a shortage of charging infrastructure.

Hyundai’s commitment to electric mobility extends beyond its domestic endeavors, as evidenced by its US$5.54 billion EV and battery plant in the U.S. state of Georgia. These are testimonials of Hyundai’s commitment to pioneering the supply of electric vehicles.
