Gov’t Launches Stringent Crackdown on Illicit Gold Mining Operations in Mondulkiri Province

In a decisive move to curb illicit gold mining activities, the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) has initiated a rigorous campaign targeting unruly operations in Me Sam, Chong Plas commune, Keo Seima district, Mondulkiri province, according to the ministry’s press release dated 2 March 2024.

This renewed crackdown comes as a response to the resurgence of illegal mining practices, characterised by the use of explosives, chemicals, and subterranean excavation. The ministry, having previously addressed these issues through education and enforcement in 2017, aims to curtail the environmental and social ramifications associated with these anarchic endeavours, emphasising the potential threat to national assets, environmental degradation, and risks to the health and safety of both local and foreign residents.

This move underscores the government’s commitment to fostering legal and responsible mining practices, mitigating severe environmental consequences, averting the loss of national revenue, and augmenting employment opportunities.

Concurrently, the ministry has extended its crackdown to encompass large-scale illicit gold mining enterprises situated in Sampov Loun village, Choam Tamao commune, Memot district, Tbong Khmum province. (Read more)
