Gov’t Initiates Stringent Crackdown on Large-Scale Illegal Gold Mining in Memot District, Tbong Khmum Province

The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) has launched a renewed crackdown on large-scale illegal gold mining operations located in Sampov Loun village, Choam Tamao commune, Memot district, Tbong Khmum province. The ministry’s proactive stance was communicated through an official press release on 10 January 2024.

This decisive campaign follows previous crackdowns in September 2021 and November 2023. In response to persistent illegal mining activities, the Tbong Khmum Provincial Administration has established a collaborative provincial working group. This group is tasked with disseminating legal awareness among the populace and enforcing the closure of large-scale illegal gold mines, some of which fall under the jurisdiction of the Deputy Prosecutor of Tbong Khmum Provincial Court.

Despite previous enforcement efforts, illegal mining activities persist, marked by the utilization of sophisticated equipment, chemicals, explosives, rock blasting, and perilous underground mining practices. This illicit business not only results in a loss of national wealth and income but also inflicts severe environmental damage. Additionally, it poses substantial risks to the health and safety of miners and the broader community.

The MME remains steadfast in its commitment to eradicating illegal mining practices. Simultaneously, it aims to foster legal mining endeavors that contribute significantly to national interests. This includes creating local job opportunities, generating indirect economic participation, boosting national budget revenues, mitigating environmental impacts, and promoting societal well-being. Through these measures, the ministry aims to drive sustainable mining practices that align with legal frameworks and contribute to the overall development of local communities.
