Gov’t Advances Modern Technology for Maintenance of Over 50,000km of Rural Roads

HE Chhay Rithi Sen, Minister of Rural Development, has urged relevant officials to adopt modern technology for the upkeep of rural roads, which now span more than 50,000 kilometres across Cambodia.

This directive was issued during a meeting on 13 March 2024, convened to review and discuss the priority program titled “Development of Physical Infrastructure and Rural Transportation” of the Ministry of Rural Development.

Key recommendations made by the minister during the meeting include:

Emphasising the maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation of rural roads, aligns with the development principle set forth by PM Hun Manet, which advocates for strengthening existing roads by 70% and expanding by 30%.

  • Adhering to the rural road policy and master plan unveiled in 2022.
  • Exploring the utilisation of new technologies in place of conventional materials to ensure road quality and resilience against climate change, particularly in high-risk areas.
  • Continuing community education initiatives to underscore the significance of roads and foster community participation.
  • Conducting inspections and implementing weight-level labelling on roads and bridges to ensure their long-term sustainability.

It’s noteworthy that rural roads span approximately 50,262 kilometres nationwide, constituting 74% of the country’s total road network.

In 2023, the Ministry of Rural Development made significant strides in the priority program on “Development of Physical Infrastructure and Rural Transportation,” achieving approximately 97% of its objectives.
