MoE’s Swift Action: 3,942 Hectares Seized in Pursat Crackdown

In a decisive move to combat natural resource crimes, the Ministry of Environment (MOE) led a five-day operation resulting in the confiscation of 3,942.73 hectares of land in Pursat province. The crackdown, conducted from 13 to 17 March 2024, marks a significant stride in curbing illicit activities impacting the region’s environmental integrity, as reported by the official Facebook page of the MOE on 18 March 2024.

Under the coordinated efforts of 10 joint working groups, comprising a formidable team of 789 personnel, HE Chay Samith, Secretary of State of the MOE, and HE Khoy Rida, Governor of Pursat Province, spearheaded the operation. The collaborative endeavour involved representatives from the National Police, National Gendarmerie, provincial authorities, and local administrations, alongside other relevant professionals.

Beyond the land seizures, enforcement actions led to the apprehension of one suspect, who was subsequently referred to the Pursat Provincial Court, while educational interventions were conducted to raise awareness among communities.

This operation, directed by HE Dr. Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment, and HE General Sao Sokha, Deputy Commander and Commander of the National Gendarmerie, signifies a proactive approach to combatting natural resource crimes. Operating under the guidance of the National Commission for the Prevention and Suppression of Natural Resource Crimes, and the Provincial Unity Command under HE Khoy Rida, Governor of Pursat Province, this initiative underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding environmental assets.

Furthermore, the MOE has outlined stringent measures to deter future infractions, including:

1. 100% law enforcement without exceptions, aiming to eradicate the culture of contracting and releasing perpetrators.
2. Strengthened cooperation with the Capital and Provincial Administrative Unity Command and local authorities to closely manage natural resources, prevent crimes, and ensure protection and conservation.
3. Continued collaboration with the National Gendarmerie Command, the Anti-Corruption Unit, and local authorities to combat natural resource crimes effectively.
4. Promotion of afforestation initiatives to increase forest cover by 60% by 2050.
