Southern Phnom Penh Set for Major Expansion with New Projects and Government Vision

The Cambodian government has announced an ambitious infrastructure development plan for the southern part of Phnom Penh, which is rapidly growing due to increasing population density. This plan is anchored by two major projects: the Techo International Airport and the Takhmao City and Prek Chik Funan Techo developments.

The unveiling of this vision was made by PM Hun Manet during the groundbreaking ceremony for twin flyovers at the intersection of Samdech Techo Hun Sen Boulevard and National Road 2 on 17 June 2024.

PM Hun Manet highlighted that the Techo International Airport and Takhmao City and Prek Chik Funan Techo projects will drive significant economic activities in the southern regions of Phnom Penh, as well as the adjacent provinces of Takeo and Kandal. He emphasised the area’s substantial potential for future generations, particularly for residents in Dangkor, Phnom Penh, and Kandal provinces, stressing the need for well-organized development to harness this potential.

Currently, Phnom Penh spans nearly 700,000 square kilometres and is home to almost 3 million residents and workers. The city’s transportation infrastructure supports approximately 2 million motorcycles and cars. To address the increasing traffic congestion, PM Hun Manet proposed several initiatives. He called for private sector investment in modern parking facilities and organised public transport systems, similar to those in developed economies. Additionally, he stressed the importance of maintaining public bus lanes and transforming areas like Boeung Tumpun and the 60-metre road into green spaces with more trees, picnic areas, and recreational facilities. He also recommended installing security cameras, solar lights, and automatic irrigation systems in public parks to enhance Phnom Penh’s attractiveness and luxury, aiming to position it as a leading smart city in ASEAN.
