Japan Grants US$54 Million Loan for Power Transmission Expansion in Phnom Penh

Japan has extended a concessional loan exceeding US$54 million to support the second phase of Phnom Penh’s power transmission and distribution system expansion. The loan marks the third funding package aimed at enhancing the city’s electricity infrastructure, with plans to build substations and transmission lines connecting to Chbar Ampov district.

The agreement was officially signed by HE Ros Silva, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, and HESANUI Kazumasa, President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Cambodia on 23 September 2024.

This phase of the project is crucial for improving the power stability and capacity of Phnom Penh’s electrical grid. It involves the construction of a new substation, high-voltage transmission lines, and a system of high and medium-voltage underground power lines. These upgrades will modernise existing substations, ensuring a more stable and reliable energy supply for the capital’s growing demand.

The third loan package represents additional funding to complete the infrastructure connecting substations to Chbar Ampov, playing a key role in expanding the city’s energy reach.

HE Ros Silva expressed deep gratitude to the Government and people of Japan, along with JICA, for their unwavering cooperation and continuous contributions to Cambodia’s socio-economic development.
