Ministry of Environment to Distribute 3 Million Saplings in Cambodia’s Green Initiative

In a significant move towards enhancing the country’s green cover, the Ministry of Environment has announced plans to distribute an additional 3 million saplings to citizens. This initiative aims to bolster Cambodia’s efforts in combating climate change and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

During a meeting with Ms. Bridgette Walker, Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy, and Ms. Kerry Pelzman, Director of Mission at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Cambodia, HE Eang Sophallet, Minister of Environment, expressed gratitude for the longstanding support from USAID in the environmental and social sectors. The meeting, held on 12 May 2025, underscored the commitment of both Cambodia and the United States to collaborate on environmental issues.

The minister highlighted the launch of the “Green Sprout” campaign, emphasising its goal of increasing public awareness about the importance of environmental conservation. HE Eang Sophallet also revealed that the ministry successfully distributed 1.3 million saplings in 2024, marking a significant step in advancing the nation’s reforestation efforts.

In a pledge to enforce stricter management of natural resources, HE Eang Sophallet stated that legal measures will be implemented to ensure sustainable practices. This continued cooperation between Cambodia and the United States is seen as crucial in promoting green diplomacy and protecting the country’s rich natural resources.

As the nation prepares for this major distribution of saplings, the Ministry of Environment encourages all citizens to participate actively in this green initiative, contributing to a healthier and more sustainable Cambodia.
