Cambodia Clinches Top Global Spot for Sustainable Land and Natural Resource Management in 2026 Rankings

The Kingdom leads international environmental stewardship ahead of Slovenia and Paraguay according to a definitive global assessment by US News and World Report

In a momentous milestone for its environmental policy and conservation efforts, Cambodia has been ranked number one globally for sustainable land and natural resource management in 2026. The landmark announcement was officially shared by the Cambodian Ministry of Environment on June 26, 2026, highlighting the country’s progressive strides in long-term ecological stewardship and green development.

The comprehensive evaluation, conducted by the prominent American media and research organization U.S. News and World Report, assessed nations across several critical indicators. According to details published by the regional media network SEA Infographics, Cambodia secured the premier global position, outperforming Slovenia, which claimed second place, and Paraguay in third. Within Southeast Asia, the Kingdom firmly established its regional leadership by ranking first, followed by Laos and Myanmar in second and third place respectively.

The global index analyzed a diverse range of environmental metrics to evaluate how effectively nations manage and protect their natural assets. The core evaluation pillars focused heavily on carbon emissions reduction, deforestation prevention, the expansion and management of protected conservation areas, sustainable trade practices, and proactive responses to water scarcity and environmental stress. Analysts note that Cambodia’s exceptional score reflects its rigorous commitment to protecting its extensive national sanctuary network, curbing forest degradation, and expanding nationwide tree-planting initiatives designed to maximize carbon absorption.

To ensure empirical accuracy and objectivity, the assessment integrated data from highly reputable international research bodies and global databases. These included the Emissions Database for Global Atmospheric Research, the Food and Agriculture Organization, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, the European Union Global Human Settlement Layer, and the World Bank. The alignment of these data streams underscores the global credibility of Cambodia’s environmental accomplishments.

This latest achievement follows closely on the heels of another major accolade earlier in the year. On May 13, 2026, U.S. News and World Report also ranked Cambodia first in the world for having the best overall natural environment, a distinction driven by the country’s effective balance of economic growth with strict biodiversity preservation. Government officials and environmental advocates emphasize that this consecutive global recognition serves as a testament to Cambodia’s clear and unwavering commitment to safeguarding its forests, ecosystems, and natural heritage for future generations.
