Stung Pursat 1 Hydropower Project Reaches Crucial Milestone Ahead of Late 2026 Launch

The $231 million clean energy facility completes official river closure to boost grid stability and regional flood management

The Stung Pursat 1 Hydropower Project in Pursat Province has achieved a pivotal milestone, successfully completing its official river closure phase to prepare for upcoming power generation. Located in Pramoy Commune within the Veal Veng District, the 80-megawatt renewable energy facility marks a significant advancement in Cambodia’s domestic infrastructure capabilities.

This critical multi-purpose project is being developed with a total capital investment of approximately $231 million by SPHP Cambodia Co., Ltd., in close partnership with the international technical firm POWERCHINA. Construction operations originally commenced in late 2022. Under current development schedules, the entire complex is expected to achieve full completion and begin supplying electricity directly to the national grid by the end of 2026. Upon completion, the facility will be capable of producing an estimated 369 million kilowatt-hours, or 369 GWh, of clean energy per year to support sustainable growth across the kingdom.

Technical and economic evaluations indicate that the operational infrastructure will deliver four primary strategic benefits to Cambodia.

  • Strengthen national energy security: It will strengthen national energy security by adding 80 megawatts of capacity, which helps minimize reliance on power imports from neighboring nations and reduces fossil fuel consumption.
  • Ensure supply during the dry season: Additionally, the effective storage capacity of the reservoir will safeguard energy supplies during the dry season, mitigating the power deficits that frequently challenge the country.
  • Water management and agriculture: Beyond electricity generation, the reservoir will serve a dual purpose by regulating water flows to protect Pursat Province from severe seasonal flooding while simultaneously securing reliable water sources for local agricultural irrigation.
  • Boost local economy and tourism: Finally, the resulting artificial lake is expected to stimulate the local economy by turning the mountainous landscape of Veal Veng into a prominent ecotourism hub, creating sustainable jobs and enhancing household incomes for nearby residents.

Overall, the Stung Pursat 1 Hydropower Project represents a significant advancement in the energy sector. This multi-purpose project effectively addresses economic demands, protects the environment, and enhances the living standards of the Cambodian people. It aligns with the long-term development strategy of the Royal Government of Cambodia. (read more) (read more)
