Floods Ravage Over 10,000 Hectares of Rice Fields Across Cambodia in Just 10 Days

In the ten days from 18 September to 27 September 2024, severe flooding has devastated over 10,000 hectares of rice fields across seven provinces in Cambodia. The floods wreaked havoc in Kratie, Stung Treng, Mondulkiri, Tbong Khmum, Kampong Cham, Kampong Thom, and Siem Reap, impacting the livelihoods of thousands. This information was confirmed by Lok Chumteav Im Rachana, Undersecretary of State and spokesperson for the Ministry of Agriculture.

The ministry’s preliminary data shows that 12,008 hectares of rice and mixed food crops have been affected, along with 449 hectares of farmland and 822 hectares of economic crops. While the total economic damage has yet to be fully assessed, officials are continuing to monitor the situation.

In a bulletin issued on the morning of 27 September 2024, the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology confirmed a gradual decline in water levels at hydrological stations on the Mekong River, Tonle Sap, and Tonle Bassac rivers. Despite this, HE Tho Chetha, Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology, has urged the public to remain vigilant, warning that the risk of further flooding remains high.
