900 MW Natural Gas Power Plant Starts Construction in Koh Kong Province

Royal Group Power, a subsidiary of the conglomerate Royal Group of Neak Oknha Kith Meng, broke ground on the construction of a 900-megawatt natural gas power plant in Koh Kong province’s Botum Sakor district.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held on October 16 under the presence of HE Keo Rattanak, Minister of Mines and Energy, Neak Neak Oknha Kith Meng, HE Mithona Phuthong, Governor of Koh Kong Province, and relevant government officials.

As planned, the plant will be equipped with two 450-megawatt turbines. The first turbine will be commenced in April 2027 and the second in December 2027.

In addition to the natural gas-fired power plant, the project will include a port for liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the ship with a capacity of 185,000 cubic meters, a 200,000 cubic meter LNG tank and a 230kV transmission line stretching over 36 km.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Pianka Thomas Joseph, CEO of Royal Group Power, said the largest 900-megawatt natural gas-fired power plant (LNG) has invested around US$1,341 million.

He stressed that the plant will contribute to strengthening the stability of the network, reliability and resilience in the electricity sector in Cambodia, as well as support to increase in the share of clean energy by up to 70 percent of Cambodia by 2030.

HE Keo Rattanak, Minister of Mines and Energy, praised the Royal Group for launching this historic second energy investment project for Cambodia, the first and largest natural gas-powered project after the success of the first historic investment project of the 400-megawatt Lower Sesan 2 hydropower plant, which is the largest source of clean energy in Cambodia today.

“This plant will play an important role in helping to stabilize electricity in Cambodia and increase the attractiveness of new investment, especially in the green industry,” he said.

Previously, the Royal Group has received permission to invest in a 700-megawatt coal-fired power project located in Botum Sakor District, Koh Kong Province. However, the company stopped the project and switched to investing in natural gas-fired power projects instead.
