Plan International Reaffirms Commitment to Water and Sanitation Initiatives in Cambodia

Plan International has announced a renewed commitment to enhance rural water and sanitation projects in Cambodia, pledging to invest USD 30 million over the duration of a 24-year cooperation agreement that spans from 2003 to 2027.

The announcement was made during a pivotal meeting between Ms. Gwynneth Wong, Country Director of Plan International in Cambodia, and HE Chhay Rithsen, the Minister of Rural Development. Ms. Wong emphasised the organisation’s dedication to supporting not only water and sanitation efforts but also health, nutrition, and the active participation of Cambodian children in these vital areas.

Minister Chhay Rithsen acknowledged the fruitful partnership between the Ministry of Rural Development and Plan International, expressing gratitude for their ongoing support. He highlighted the significant progress made in rural areas due to their collaborative efforts in education, health, sanitation, and clean water initiatives.

With current nationwide water and sanitation coverage in Cambodia reaching approximately 89.90%, including 87.40% for basic water and sanitation and 92.40% for basic rural sanitation, the ministry is optimistic about achieving its ambitious target. By 2030, they aim to ensure that all citizens have access to adequate clean water and 100% sanitation, contributing to a healthier, more sustainable environment for all Cambodians.

This commitment by Plan International underscores a shared vision for the future, building upon years of successful cooperation to enhance the quality of life in Cambodia’s rural communities.
