Cambodia to Install Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Nationwide to Promote Green Transport

The Cambodian government has announced a major initiative to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations along major roads nationwide, aiming to reduce environmental pollution and lower transportation costs for citizens.

The announcement was made by H.E. Keo Rattanak, Minister of Mines and Energy, during the 3rd meeting on Cambodia’s energy transition toward a carbon-free future, held on October 30, 2025.

According to the minister, the Electricity of Cambodia (EDC) will allocate a substantial budget to build high-speed charging stations for both cars and motorcycles nationwide. Studies show that driving electric vehicles is nearly five times more cost-effective than using diesel or gasoline, while significantly contributing to environmental preservation.

To further encourage EV adoption, the Ministry of Mines and Energy plans to lower the current charging cost — now between 1,600 and 1,700 riels — and expand the number of charging stations to ensure convenience for all vehicle types, including personal cars and trucks.

Cambodia, which already sources 62 percent of its electricity from clean energy, ranks as the second-largest clean energy consumer in ASEAN, following Laos, and surpasses the regional target of 30 percent. By 2030, the country aims to increase its share of clean energy to 70 percent, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and a greener future.
