Korea has expressed interested in the construction project for the bridge connecting Chroy Changvar to Svay Chrum in Lavea Em District, Kandal Province, according to H.E Vasim Sorya, a spokesman from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT).

Speaking with Construction &Property Magazine on 22 August, H.E Vasim Sorya said that representatives from Korea had recently visited high-level Cambodian officials at ministry to discuss plans for the project which the Koreans are now studying.

According to H.E Vasim Sorya, construction of the bridge project may cost more than US$30 million because it will cross the Mekong River so the length and height will need to be greater than those bridges that cross the Tonle Sap River such as the Chroy Changvar Friendship bridges.

H.E Vasim Sorya could not provide further details on the specific location of the bridge, timeframe, or designs for project as it is currently in the first study plan stage. In addition, the ministry does not know whether the construction project will funded through a grant from Korea or if it will be built under any form of agreement.

He also pointed out that China had previously proposed to build the bridge under a build-operate-transfer (BOT) agreement but had suspended its plans due to other priority projects.
