60-megawatt Solar Power Plant Being Built in Cambodia

As the world shifts toward investment in​ renewable energy, Cambodia is also diversifying its energy sources toward solar power.

Cambodia is now preparing to get see a huge solar power plant come online in the near future thanks to an investment by local electric power technology provider SchneiTec Group. Located in Kompong Speu province,the plant will have the capacity to generate up to 60 megawatts of electricity for Electricite Du Cambodge (EDC).

The plant will comprise of 200,000 solar panels installed by the world’s largest manufacturer of solar panels JinkoSolar Holding Co., Ltd, according to its recent press release. Work on installing the system began in November 2018 with the supply of electricity expected to start in December 2019.

“This 60mw solar installation is just the first step towards an abundant and vibrant renewable energy future in Cambodia,” said Gener Miao, Vice President Global Sales and Marketing of JinkoSolar.

“We have great expectations for the entire region. The region’s booming populations, strong economic growth engines, and abundant sunlight represent an exciting opportunity for solar and for JinkoSolar,” he added.

The solar power sector has been supported by the government with its policy of connecting solar systems to the national grid. Meanwhile, the recent forum on energy in Cambodia showed that Cambodia has transitioned away from diesel-generated electricity and has reduced power imports from a peak of 60% to less than 20%.
