150MW Coal-fired Power Plant in Sihanoukville Nearing Completion

With Cambodia aiming to generate increased electricity to be more energy self-sufficient, a new coal-fired power plant in Sihanoukville province using US and Japan technology is nearing completion, according to a senior official of Electricite du Cambodge (EDC).

Speaking to local media FRESH NEWS on 18 March 2018, H.E Keo Rattanak, Royal Government of Cambodia delegate in charge of managing Electricite du Cambodge (EdC) said that the 150-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Steung Hav district of Sihanoukville is scheduled to be launched in September 2019.

According to H.E Keo Rattanak, the new coal-fired power plant has been under construction for more than two years using US-based General Electric (GE) supplies and engineered by Japan-based firm Toshiba.

The government approved this US$600 million coal-fired power plant for Malaysian firm Cambodia Energy Cambodia Co., Ltd. (CEL2) in 2017 and the company selected Toshiba Plant Systems & Services Corporation (TPSC) as a turnkey plant constructor with GE supplies boiler, turbine, and generator.

Currently, there are two coal-fired power plants in Sihanoukville Province, one from Cambodia International Investment Development Group (CIIDG) and another from Malaysian firm Leader Universal Holdings. (Read more)
