Airport Train Launched With Tickets Free Until July

H.E. Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister, Minister of Public Works and Transport presided over the soft launch of the train system connecting Phnom Penh City to the capital’s airport with a special promotion of free tickets until the end of July.

The air-conditioned train is capable of holding up to 100 passengers and will take less than 30 minutes per trip.

“We plan to run the train 24/7 and it will depart every 30 minutes. For the price, at this stage we are still considering and studying it. But, I can say it will be the cheapest method of transport to go the airport from the city,” said H.E. Sun Chanthol.

“The next plan will see the self-check in counter at the Phnom Penh Station where the passengers can check in at the station without having to wait in line at the airport, just like many others developed countries have done,” he added.

This was only the soft opening, and the official grand opening is expected to be in May or June.

“We are now currently using the old train we have, and we are still waiting for the new trains ordered from Mexico, which will arrive by May or June. Then, PM Samdech Hun Sen will do the official grand opening again,” the minister said.

“We have done what we have promised to the public, the four projects to be launched by Khmer New Year. First, we launched the Serey Sophorn-Poipet train (read more). Then, we ran the water taxi service on 4 April (read more). Now, we start the airport train, and lastly on 12 April, we will open the Psar Day Hoi flyover for the public use as well,” he added.
