Artisan Angkor Silks Aims to Expand Khmer Silk Production with 15-Hectare Mulberry Plantation

Siem Reap-based Artisan Angkor Company is embarking on an ambitious project to bolster Khmer silk production. The company representatives met with Lok Chumteav Im Rachana, Undersecretary of State of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, to discuss plans for a new 15-hectare mulberry tree plantation, on 18 May 2024.  This initiative signifies a commitment to expanding domestic silk production and meeting the growing demand for this exquisite Cambodian handicraft.

During the discussions, Artisan Angkor representatives highlighted the need for increased mulberry cultivation to meet the rising demand for high-quality Khmer silk.  Their vision aligns with the Ministry of Agriculture’s focus on preserving Cambodia’s rich silk-making tradition. “Raising silkworms and producing silk handicrafts are woven into the very fabric of Khmer identity,” remarked Mrs. Im Rachana.  She further emphasised the project’s potential to generate local employment opportunities, boost household incomes, and curb rural-urban migration.

In a move that underscores the collaborative spirit of the project, the General Department of Agriculture has pledged its support. This partnership will see the government department contribute expertise in breeding resilient silkworm varieties and providing technical training in mulberry tree cultivation and harvesting techniques. This comprehensive approach aims to equip Artisan Angkor with the necessary resources to address current and future challenges within the silk production industry.
