Banteay Meanchey’s 5 Flourishing SEZs Fuel Unprecedented 20,000 Job Growth

Banteay Meanchey province is experiencing a remarkable economic transformation, spearheaded by its five thriving special economic zones (SEZs), which have become major catalysts for job creation and development. With close to 20 factories operating within these SEZs, the province has successfully generated employment opportunities for over 20,000 individuals. Speaking to reporters from Radio National of Cambodia on 19th June 2023, HE Oum Rath, Governor of Banteay Meanchey Province, highlighted the significant impact of these zones on the region’s progress.

HE Governor Rath underscored the presence of five SEZs in Banteay Meanchey, with four of them already in operation, complemented by an industrial park comprising nearly 20 factories. These industrial entities have become robust engines of growth, driving employment and prosperity for the local population.

Moreover, the province boasts over 1,000 small-scale handicraft production bases, each employing 2, 3, 5, 10, or 20 individuals. These enterprises specialize in various sectors, including jewelry manufacturing, textiles, and the processing of agricultural products and by-products. Their combined efforts contribute to the dynamic economic landscape of Banteay Meanchey, attracting both domestic and foreign investments.

HE Governor Rath emphasized the transformative power of these industries, elevating Banteay Meanchey from a remote and sparsely populated area to a vibrant hub of infrastructure development. The city of Poipet, in particular, has witnessed substantial growth, as employment opportunities abound, allowing residents to earn decent incomes and lead civilized lives.

Intriguingly, the majority of companies investing in the province’s special economic zones hail from overseas, representing a diverse range of countries such as Thailand, Japan, and China. Their presence not only bolsters Cambodia’s economy but also strengthens international ties, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange.

The success story of Banteay Meanchey’s special economic zones serves as an inspiration, showcasing the positive impacts that strategic economic planning and investment can have on local communities. As the province continues to flourish, it stands poised to attract further investments, unleash its economic potential, and uplift the livelihoods of its people.
