Battambang – Banteay Meanchey Road to Expand to Four Lanes in 2020

Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen this morning presided over the ground breaking ceremony for the project improving 84.74km of National Road No. 5 between Battambang and Serey Sophorn funded through a USD185 million loan from the government of Japan.

The project will upgrade this section of road section to Asphalt Concrete and expand it to 23 metres wide from two lanes to four lanes. In addition, this project also includes the construction two ring roads; one of 23.92 kilometres encircling Battambang city and another of 9.34 kilometres encircling Serey Sophorn city.

The road will be constructed by two Japanese construction companies, Tekken Taiyu Joint Venture and Daiho Asanuma Joint Venture, with technical checks carried out by Katahira & Engineers International.

With a completion timeframe of 36 months, the upgraded road will be opened to traffic in March 2020.

The northern section of the National Road No. 5 upgrade project is the first to be undertaken with Prek Kdam to Pursat being the next stage followed by Pursat to Battambang, and last but not least from Bantey Meanchey to Poipet.

“After the completion, this new road will improve the logistic system a lot especially for people in the area. National Road No. 5 is a very important road in term of logistics. It is part of ASEAN Highway No. 1 which connects between three main cities of GMS which are Bangkok, Phnom Penh, Ho Chi Minh,” said PM Samdech Hun Sen.

PM Samdech Hun Sen also expressed his gratitude to H.E. Hidehisa Horinouchi, Ambassador of Japan to Cambodia and the government of Japan that continues to support Cambodia, and so far has helped Cambodia a lot in many sectors especially in infrastructure projects such as roads and bridges.
