Anglo-Swedish Pharma Giant AstraZeneca to Build US$1.5bn Green Cancer Treatment Facility in Singapore

Leading pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, a joint venture between British and Swedish interests, has announced a significant investment of US$1.5 billion in a brand-new cancer treatment plant located in Singapore. This state-of-the-art facility will focus on the production of antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), a new generation of targeted cancer therapies. The news, reported by Reuters on 20 May 2024, highlights AstraZeneca’s commitment to expanding its footprint in Asia and its focus on innovative cancer treatment solutions.

The Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) is actively supporting the construction of this groundbreaking facility.  Construction is slated to begin later this year, with an anticipated completion date of 2029.  Uniquely, the plant is designed to be entirely carbon-neutral, emitting zero CO2 emissions during operation. This aligns with Singapore’s growing reputation as a hub for sustainable development and environmentally conscious manufacturing.

Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) represent a cutting-edge approach to cancer treatment.  These targeted therapies utilise antibodies to specifically bind to cancer cells. Once attached, the ADCs release potent cancer-killing chemicals directly to the targeted cells, minimising damage to healthy tissues.  This targeted approach offers a potentially more effective and less debilitating treatment option for cancer patients.

AstraZeneca has been actively expanding its presence in key Asian markets, including China, Indonesia, and India. This new Singapore facility represents a significant step forward for the company’s Asian operations.  Additionally, AstraZeneca has partnered with Daiichi Sankyo in Japan to establish the Enhertu breast cancer treatment centre, further demonstrating their commitment to advancing cancer care across Asia.
