Cambodia Achieves Milestone in Boundary Marker Installation Around Tonle Sap Lake

In a significant development, Cambodia has successfully installed over 83% of the planned boundary markers around Tonle Sap Lake in just 242 days. The Tonle Sap Authority completed approximately 1,069 boundary markers across three geographical regions in the six provinces surrounding the lake.

During a recent meeting highlighting the Authority’s achievements, His Excellency Tho Jetha, Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology and Chairman of the Tonle Sap Authority, confirmed that from April 1 to November 25, 2024, the project had reached an impressive completion rate of 83.33%.

The Minister noted that three provinces—Pursat, Battambang, and Banteay Meanchey—have completed 100% of their markers. Meanwhile, Siem Reap has achieved 83.61%, Kampong Thom 86.41%, and Kampong Chhnang 72.55%.

His Excellency also provided updates on the area mapping for the three regions. Following a thorough review and verification of actual locations, the updated area maps indicate that Area One encompasses 436,879.11 hectares, Area Two covers 413,488.08 hectares, and Area Three includes 561,634.60 hectares.

The Tonle Sap region is divided into three distinct areas: Area One serves as a residential and agricultural zone; Area Two functions as a subsistence-use zone and buffer; and Area Three is designated as a strictly protected flooded forest area, which can experience annual flooding up to 7 meters during the rainy season.

This significant boundary demarcation initiative was undertaken following a directive from Prime Minister Samdech Hun Manet. The objective is to accurately delineate the areas while prioritizing the sustainable preservation and management of the Tonle Sap ecosystem for future generations.
