Cambodia and Australia Strengthen Economic Bonds as Trade Surges to $1.2 Billion

A landmark rice export agreement between Amru Rice and Australia’s Green Group underscores a deepening partnership fueled by sustainable growth and bilateral support.

The economic relationship between Cambodia and Australia reached a significant milestone in 2025 as bilateral trade volume climbed to $1.2 billion. According to data released by the Australian Embassy in Cambodia, this growth was significantly bolstered by Cambodian exports, which accounted for approximately 850 million dollars of the total trade volume. This upward trajectory highlights the strengthening commercial bonds and a mutual commitment to expanding investment ties between the two nations.

A key highlight of this deepening cooperation was celebrated on March 6, 2026, when the Australian Ambassador to Cambodia, Derek Yip, joined industry leaders to mark a new chapter in agricultural trade. The occasion featured the official send-off of the first two containers of premium Cambodian jasmine rice destined for Australia under a new agreement between Amru Rice and the Green Group, one of Australia’s most established food wholesalers. This contract involves the supply of roughly 400 metric tonnes of high-quality rice through June 2026, paving the way for Cambodian products to secure a permanent place on major Australian supermarket shelves.

The success of this partnership is anchored in strategic support from the Australian government through initiatives like the Cambodia Australia Partnership for Resilient Economic Development (CAPRED). Such programs have been instrumental in helping Cambodian agri-businesses access premium international markets by focusing on value-added processing and sustainable farming practices. These efforts aim to drive inclusive economic growth and create more jobs for Cambodians while providing Australian consumers with a wider variety of high-quality products.

Beyond this specific agreement, the broader context of Cambodia’s rice sector remains robust. In 2025, the country exported a record 940,000 metric tonnes of milled rice globally, generating $602 million in revenue. With the Australian rice market projected to grow to over $7 billion by 2033, Cambodian producers are well-positioned to capitalize on the rising demand for specialty and organic rice varieties. Ambassador Yip emphasized that these deals not only benefit the private sector but also solidify the long-term economic architecture connecting the two countries for future generations.
