Cambodia and Korea Collaborate on Renewable Energy Initiatives

In an exciting development for Cambodia’s renewable energy sector, the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology has announced a partnership with the Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-water) and Chilbo to explore the installation of small-scale hydropower and solar energy systems on reservoir dams across nine target provinces. This announcement was made during a meeting held on April 24, 2025, to discuss the preliminary feasibility study for this innovative project.

HE Pon Sacha, Secretary of State at the Ministry, revealed that the Korean team has identified 16 potential dam sites, including notable locations such as Anlong Chrey Reservoir, Ta Sal Reservoir, and Doun Tri Dam. Among these, two reservoirs—Raksa Reservoir in Preah Vihear Province and Doun Tri Reservoir in Battambang Province—have been singled out for detailed feasibility studies due to their estimated energy generation potential of 4 to 8 megawatts.

Proactively, His Excellency Sacha urged the Korean advisors to explore additional technical options. He also mentioned the inclusion of two more reservoirs—the Dang Kip Dam and Kampong Kor Dam—requested by the Director of the Department of Water Resources and Meteorology of Kampong Thom Province, for further examination. The Secretary of State emphasized the importance of assessing even the low-potential reservoir dams for possible solar energy installations as part of the overall initiative.

This collaborative feasibility study highlights Cambodia’s commitment to harnessing renewable energy and aims to enhance the nation’s energy security. The targeted provinces for this initiative include Kampong Chhnang, Pursat, Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Oddar Meanchey, Siem Reap, Preah Vihear, Kampong Thom, and Kampong Speu.

As Cambodia continues to push towards sustainable energy solutions, this partnership with South Korea could pave the way for a greener future, ensuring a reliable energy supply while contributing to environmental conservation.
